1.    How did you meet Paul and Lisa, our Co-Founders? 

Lisa and I worked together in another life ~ Whistler in the mid 90’s. She was ‘dating’ this sweet sensitive soul named Paul and we ended up living together, ''Three's Company' style on Rainbow Road. Lisa was and is one of my major influences around nourishing the body on a cellular level. What we eat is important, but what we digest and assimilate is paramount to our health! And what’s not to love about Paul!




2.    You run Yoga and Wellness Retreats how did they come about?

In 2002 I moved to 10 acres in the forest with my partner Willy. With a deep desire to share our lifestyle with others, I started Milagro Retreats and began hosting International Yoga & Surf Retreats here on Vancouver Island and in Baja, Mexico. Over the years this has evolved into Milagro Living ~ Tools and Resources to support your Thriving Lifestyle. Here we share not only our own Retreats, but other like minded offerings as well as recipes and the Milagro Marketplace.

3.    How do you incorporate your health food company into the retreats?

hOMe Grown Living Foods literally ‘Sprouted’ out of Milagro Retreats. My passion for nourishing our guests with abundant whole food feasts was inspired by the concepts of Living Foods about 10 years ago. I started serving more Sprouted Raw Vegan dishes and one thing led to another….guests wanted access to these foods outside of the Retreats.


In 2008 we started selling our hybrid whole food snack at our Local Farmer’s Market and have since built our self-distributed product line to over 10 SKUS in packaged and BULK in Retailers across Canada….what a wild ride it has been!

4.    You have been doing these retreats a long time, how has the demographic changed over the years?


Over the past 14 years our demographic has matured. When our focus broadened to include more than yoga and surf with cooking classes, herbal wisdom classes, dance and more, our target market also grew in alignment with these transformational offerings.

Mermaid Soup   

 Serves 6 – 8

The creamy blend of tahini, miso, and mineral rich seaweeds make this nourishing soup a meal in a bowl. Quick and simple to prepare.



 6 cups water or vegetable stock

1/8 cup mixed dried seaweed ~ wakame, arami, hiziki, dulse

1 leek, finely sliced

1 Tbsp fresh ginger, minced

2 stalks celery, diced

1small zucchini, diced

2 carrots, diced

1 Tbsp coconut oil

2 Tbsp nutritional yeast

2 -3 Tbsp raw tahini

4 Tbsp shiro miso

Peruvian Pink salt to taste


Mindful Preparation:


Soak seaweeds in water or stock while preparing the remaining ingredients.

Heat liquid to almost boiling. Add leeks, celery, carrots and ginger, simmer for 5 minutes over low heat.

Add zucchini and coconut oil. Simmer until veggies are tender, 5-7 minutes.

Remove 1/4 cup of liquid and blend with tahini, nutritional yeast and miso. Add back to the soup and remove from heat.

Taste before adjusting seasonings or adding salt.


~ Never allow miso to boil, this will destroy the enzymes and life force.



Goji Berry Cacao Fudge


1 1/2 cups cashews

1 cup cacao nibs

1 cup cacao powder

1/2 cup packed dates

1/2 cup cacao butter, melted 

1/4 cup maple syrup

1/4 cup coconut butter

1 TBSP maca

1/4 tsp vanilla powder 

1/4 tsp Peruvian Pink Course Salt

1/4 cup hemp seeds

1/4 cup goji berries 

1/4 cup nuts of your choice


Mindful Preparation


In a vita mix or food processor grind the cacao nibs until they are finely ground. Add cashews and grind. pour into a bowl.

Process dates and maple syrup until smooth

Pour ground mixture back into processor along with the rest of the ingredients except the goji berries, nuts and hemp seeds.

oil a 20cm square pan with coconut oil. pour out mixture into pan. Spread mixture out and sprinkle on the rest of the ingredients and press firmly into the pan

place in fridge for 1 hour to set
