Post three of five

Starting the day right

Hannah and Jen from Health Synergy here, sharing our second post as part of our wellness-boosting collaboration with Power Super Foods .

The topic for this post is starting the day right.

Getting off to a healthy start first thing of a morning is so important because it establishes your mindset and behavior for the rest of the day.

If you start the day with a nourishing and wholesome breakfast, not only will you feel fuller and more satisfied, but also more motivated to continue to eat well throughout the day.

Starting the day right also decreases the likelihood of snacking and over eating later in the day.

For some inspiration and ideas on starting the day right, try:

Kickstarting your metabolism

Upon rising, have a glass of hot water and lemon each morning. Doing so helps to kick start the metabolism and re-hydrate the body after sleep. The added Vitamin C boost (from the lemon) also aids digestion and helps to alkalize our system and support detoxification. ⠀

A nourishing breakfast

Enjoy a nourishing, superfood packed breakfast like a smoothie bowl. This is how we at Health Synergy like to start most days. Usually ours will be an acai bowl, alternating between different superfood ingredients such as cacao for a chocolatey twist, or mango and coconut in the warmer months.

Pictured below is our Power Super Foods Super Berry Smoothie Bowl. Featuring Power Super Foods Acai, Maqui and Maca Powders, this dish is a delicious, nutrient packed breakfast that really helps keep your energy levels lifted throughout the day.

Try it for yourself:

1 frozen pitaya sachet

2 frozen bananas

1/4 cup fresh or frozen strawberries

1/2 cup frozen blueberries

1/2 tbsp raw honey

1/2 tbsp Power Super Foods Maqui Powder

1/4 cup coconut water

1 tbsp peanut butter

2 tsp Power Super Foods Maca Powder

Method

  • Combine all ingredients in a high-power blender, blend until smooth and creamy.
  • Transfer mixture to bowls and top with your choice of granola, fresh fruits and/or additional peanut butter. Serve immediately.

Getting prepared ahead of time

Think you don’t have time to make a healthy breakfast? For those who are time poor, we suggest preparing your breakfast the night before. Bircher muesli and chia puddings are perfect for this – we strongly recommend our Power Super Foods Creamy Cacao Bircher.

Creamy Cacao Bircher

Serves 2

Ingredients

1 cup gluten-free oats

1 1/4 cup almond milk

3 tbsp coconut yoghurt

3 tbsp Power Super Foods Cacao Powder

1 tbsp Power Super Foods Organic Chia Seeds

1 tbsp hulled tahini

2 tbsp Power Super Foods Coconut Sugar

1/2 tsp cinnamon

Method

  • Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl, mix well and refrigerate overnight.
  • In the morning, transfer mixture to bowls or jars and top with fresh fruit, Power Super Foods Cacao Nibs and/or additional honey to taste.

Another quick and healthy breakfast option is yoghurt and homemade granola. You can make a batch of our Power Super Foods Hazelnut Crunch Granola on a weekend to keep you going throughout the week. It’s delicious served with yoghurt and/or your choice of milk. We highly recommend making your own granola as the store-bought varieties often contain excessive amounts of sugar and oils.

Hazelnut Crunch Granola

Serves 8

Ingredients

1 cup hazelnuts

1/2 cup coconut oil, melted

6 medjool dates

1/4 cup almond milk

1 1/2 cups gluten-free oats

1 cup quinoa flakes

1 cup shredded coconut

2 tbsp Power Super Foods Coconut Sugar

1 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp vanilla bean powder

1/2 tsp Himalayan salt

Method

  • Preheat oven to 180 degrees
  • Combine hazelnuts, coconut oil, dates and almond milk in a blender. Roughly blend.
  • Combine all remaining ingredients in a large mixing bowl, mix well and then stir through hazelnut blend (it’s easiest to use your hands).
  • Spread granola over a lined baking tray and place in the oven for 25-30 minutes, turning every few minutes.
  • Turn off heat and leave granola in the oven for approximately 10 minutes to continue baking.
  • Once completely cooled, store granola in an air-tight glass jar.

Whatever breakfast option you choose to go with, we recommend sitting down to eat, rather than eating ‘on the go’. Doing so gives you time to enjoy and properly digest your food. That means eating whilst in ‘rest and digest’ mode, rather than fight or flight, which is the dominant system when stressed or rushed.

A healthier weekend brunch

Don’t let your healthy practices fall to the way-side once the weekend arrives. Instead of a traditional (often greasy), savoury breakfast, try our Power Super Foods Eggs Benedict. It has a delicious pumpkin ‘hollandaise’ and is topped with Power Super Foods Nori Flakes.

Nori flakes are a delicious seasoning, rich in important trace minerals: iodine and iron. Iodine is responsible for normal production of thyroid hormones and the maintenance of healthy skin. Whilst iron is necessary for normal oxygen transport, energy production and immune function. ⠀
